25-29 September: the fourth edition of the International Fair of Design promises to be a polyhedral experience
Design, design and again design, but not only: a synergic entanglement between culture, creativity and industrial growth will give birth to an edition with a more holistic view, thanks to curators Elena Vai and Enrico Maria Pastorello. Bologna will reveal itself, once more, as one of the most vital and inspiring cities for culture, art, joy, energy, sharing, meetings and ideas; it will open its ancient buildings’ doors, show beautiful terraces with a breathtaking atmosphere and let you wander along its streets full of history. “Creativity, innovation, experimentation: Bologna Design Week is an event to discover talents and promote design culture. It […] valorizes one of the excellences of Italian and Bolognese industrial production and […] gives the general public the opportunity to appreciate the originality of products and materials, craftsmanship and know-how typical of Made in Italy” affirms Matteo Lepore, Councilor for Tourism and Culture of Bologna city.
The 2018 edition of Bologna Design Week (BDW 2018) is very eclectic: first, the culture of design will receive a strong influence from talented designers, architects, art galleries, creative groups and companies who accepted the “Call of Projects” to participate and share their ideas and competences. Their important contribute will enrich the week plan from Tuesday 25th until Saturday 29th and animate the old town with workshops, exhibitions, competitions, screenings, guided tours and design talks. Second, the projects that will interact with the design theme come from several inspiring sectors, such as cinema, food, fashion and music.
As 2018 is the year dedicated to cultural heritage throughout Europe, the historic city centre of Bologna will play a relevant role into this edition: it will be the special background for the rich program of activities and thematic itineraries that will represent an occasion to showcase the several Emilia Romagna’s excellences. Cersaie International Fair (Ceramics for Architecture and Bathroom Furnishings) will still be in partnership for the fourth year. Other confirmed partnership is with Dynamo Velostazione: its “Esprit du Velò” initiative of proposing organized itineraries by bike among talks, meetings, performances and exhibitions wants to bring out the pleasant and enjoyable side of Bologna by bicycle.
Together with the city centre of Bologna, other key sites will be involved into the Bologna Design Week circuit:
Palazzo Isolani, the iconic eighteenth century palace rich in history and elegance, stands for the core venue and info/press point; it will host a selection of historical design companies inside its lavish rooms, like Molteni&C|Dada, Arper, Artek, USM and Vitra, while the external garden will become a lounge bar, with Corradi’s four “Defense” Sun Sail that will enrich the outdoor with its innovative design solutions
ex Chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve (ex Church of Saint Mary of the Snow) will host the Insidesign Studiostore
Galleria Cavour is the historical meeting point between fashion, art and design
Highlights of the week
Wednesday 26th you’ll live the most special night of the whole event: “Design Night” will contribute to give a different perception of the historical side of Bologna, with extraordinary openings of affiliated Ascom shops, access to undiscovered buildings and exclusive paths to explore until midnight.
If you’re curious to see how fashion and food, some of the excellences of Emilia Romagna, can be conjugated with design, then you can’t miss the projects in plan, like:
“Tutti a tavola. I tavoli da pranzo del design italiano dal 1950 al 1990”, promoted by the FICO Foundation, it showcases Italian designed tables from 1950 to 1990
“Custom Brand, Feel the Difference”, conceived by Stile Bottega Architettura
“Future Brand Identity”, exhibition of projects by students of the University of Bologna for Fiorentini + Baker
“Open Studios for BDW”, big tour of the several creative studios of design, architecture, graphic, music and more all around the city
Little jewel of the Bologna Design Week vision will be the Esprit Nouveau pavillion, iconic architectural structure recently restored and placed near the Fair quartier of Bologna. Mario Nanni, master of lights and founder of Viabizzuno factory, will introduce his crazy work in a site-specific exhibition that will brighten the whole pavilion with an intensive atmosphere and his brilliant geniality.
The special ingredient of this fourth edition is the eclectic spirit that brings a fresh air of news:
Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna will honor the international fair with a film festival dedicated to design and creativity; the selection “Creative maps of the city” taken among the restored movies into the huge archive will include short movies and features from the Twenties to the Eighties. A great conjunction between the seventh art, so expressive and emotional, with the beauty and intuition of interiors and architecture projects.
BDW Market is a new format that introduces a new concept of temporary exhibition space: for the whole week, creatives, artists and designers can show and sell their most curious products and creations. The BDW Market will take place in the foyer of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna that, for the occasion, on 29th September will include into the available products also its most extravagant furnishings and backstages from the suggestive archive of the theatre.
Absolute new entry is the Marsala District Bologna. More than a district, MDBo will construct a deep connection between different areas of Bologna with different backgrounds and focuses. Following the ideal of the Bologna Design Week of combining the design world with culture, artists, artisans, entrepreneurs and researchers, thematic isles have been designed to cover and unit three important areas in Bologna city: the historic Via Marsala (in the past known as Via di Mezzo, “Middle Steet”), the university quartier (Via Zamboni) and the commercial street (Via Indipendenza).
This year, Bologna Design Week is also going to leave a recognisable and memorable sign, thanks to its multi-sensorial heredity developed especially for the event: IRMA Records, a Bolognese music label, has created a dedicated soundtrack that will be played throughout all the sites involved into the International Fair’s activities; in addition, a dedicated perfume with its characteristic, special fragrance will distinguish and denote each space linked to the fair
Thanks to YouTool, communication agency based in Bologna that has conceived this great project since the first edition in 2015, the 2018 Bologna Design Week has the right assets to start at its best, with an empowered collaboration between designers and companies and a constantly increasing involvement of enthusiast citizens and tourists.
