Doctors In Piazza Maggiore

University Of Bologna

They were 470 Doctors of Research who were rewarded with a ceremony in Bologna's most important Piazza (Piazza Maggiore). There were many important people present for the ceremony, from the Dean of the University of Bologna Ivano Dionigi, the Mayor of Bologna Virginio Merola, the President of Unindustria of Bologna Alberto Vacchi and the Philosopher Umberto Eco; however the attention of the entire city was on the young doctors who are very much the future of the country.

The future of these young doctors was the central point of the speeches delivered by many of these public figures, Umberto Eco saying: "We start losing neurons at the age of 24, you will become professors, maybe even Deans and Members of Parliament, but you will never be more intelligent than you are today, to throw you away would be a great shame." It would be a great shame indeed as these young students have reached the highest level of education available and face an uncertain future especially in their home country with many opportunities coming only from abroad. The Dean of the University of Bologna Ivano Dionigi knows this too well: "Abroad our Doctors find work and establish themselves, but for how long can we allow ourselves to continue down this route of self-harm? This is a proper form of suicide: to give you over with all your brilliance to other countries." He continues to say: " You are our Ambassadors, not misfits and exiles, your title is a passport: not marching papers." From this comes the Dean's appeal to the Government, he invited the Government to change their policies: to dedicate more funds towards the best laureates to keep them from leaving Italy. He also asked industrials to pick their managers from the cream of the crop offer by the University. He ends by asking the new Doctors to "assume their responsibilities to change the social, political and civil context of Italy."

The Mayor also received an applause when he appeals for "the generosity of adults who know when it is time to step aside". Martina D'Alessandro, a young doctor in Architecture also mentions "Give us the same opportunities that the generations that preceded us had, they should be denied to us".

Then came the ceremony of collection the Doctorate, with the students coming up one by one, in strictly alphabetical order and ends with Dean Ivano Dionigi announcing "I know announce Doctors of Research!" at which the students throw their caps up in the air, a scene common in American and English Universities, where many of these brilliant minds, unfortunately, will probably be forced to emigrate.
