ENOTECA ITALIANA

Restaurants | Food & Wine | Shopping

It’s one of the small ironies of Bologna that the entrance to this wine bar is on via Malcontenti (Unsatisfied Street), given that no one inside ever seems so. A street-corner niche of buon gusto, Enoteca Italiana is the essence of Bologna: it’s warm, it’s worldly, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Here, locals, like the guy who works next door and runs in for a refill of rosé Champagne (sometimes fetching the bottle himself from the refrigerator), rub shoulders with the just-passing-through, among them four German women sampling Emilia-Romagna white wines (very good, incidentally) and buying gourmet gifts one late afternoon.

Enoteca Italiana is the ultimate neighborhood place, but the neighborhood is the next block and around the world. Owners Marco Nannetti and Claudio Cavallari, both of whom started as sommeliers, are the soul of the place and have the medals to prove it, having twice won the Oscar dei Vini awarded by the magazine Il Sommelier (2000 and 2002).

As the name hints, Enoteca Italiana started as a wine store and still offers an encyclopedic selection of Italian wines as well as a menu of salumi and cheeses. Nannetti was told he could never make a go of a wine bar - and was smart enough to disregard the advice - but he and Cavallari did something radically different back in 1992: they stayed open from 12 to 3.
