THE FAIR BETS ALL ON THE "MADE IN ITALY" LABEL - ARTE FIERA 2013

In 2013, Bologna’s ArteFiera reaches a particularly difficult moment in the global economy for art galleries, that pay the price for the grave worldwide crisis of the economy. But it is precisely for this reason that the fair in Bologna, historically the first in Italy—and not just because it has reached its 37th edition, but for the importance and the role that it is attributed with—aims on the one side to better establish its image, and at the same time, to become more of a point of reference, not just symbolically, for Italian art and its system, and this, with a spirit of transformation that will be the foundation for plans for the future. It is obvious that now more than ever, art is going through a period of globalization that it cannot help but measure itself against. However, it is just with this outlook that it becomes necessary to make the most of our country’s potential. This edition of ArteFiera therefore means to raise the flag of the “Made in Italy” label, it being widely valued also for that which concerns the visual arts. Just think of the international reputation of various protagonists of the beginning of the twentieth century—we may think of Fontana, Burri, Manzoni, Castellani, and the Poor art group up through that of the Transavantgarde—all the way up to current times of Cattelan and Vezzoli, to name just a few. But in order to more effectively uphold our artists in a panorama of scarce public funding that we are all aware of, an art fair must demonstrate its ability to take on an international outlook. It is in this direction that the idea to hatch a more targeted strategy is moving, a strategy that should yield results as of the next edition. In the meantime, there are already novelties for the 2013 event, beginning with the exhibition curated by Laura Cherubini and Lea Mattarella, which will offer a profile of Italian art of the last century with a highly selected lineup of works of art, lent by the galleries present at the fair. The program of conferences, too, with the participation of well-known protagonists including artists, critics, curators, collectors and economists will touch on today’s themes, in a time more complex and problematic than ever, from the meeting point between the status quo in Italy and its international points of reference. For that which concerns the structure of the fair, it is sufficient to say that the galleries that present the works of artists that have already made their name in history and those that exclusively deal with the latest generations will be set side by side with a group of “young” galleries, i.e., galleries active for no more than five years, and others that have opted for the Solo Show section (meaning an exhibition dedicated to a single artist). The latter, too, is a choice made in the name of quality.

What will Arte Fiera 2013 be like? The next edition will be different from the other editions, perhaps even better in the sense that it will confirm its central role in the panorama of Italian art fairs while at the same time giving out the first signals of change and of an evolution made necessary today because that panorama is, in turn, evolving. The fundamental role of the Italian galleries within Arte Fiera is confirmed. Bologna remains the longest running and most important Italian fair of this kind, and this character will be underscored also by the collateral events that will take place on the premises of the fair. These include an exhibition curated by Laura Cherubini and Lea Mattarella, which will give a new reading of twentieth century Italian art, proposing a selection of works that come from many of the participating galleries. On the other hand, many of the scheduled conferences will take a look at the status quo of our country’s art system. A number of main players of high international esteem will speak—artists like Francesco Vezzoli and curators like Francesco Bonami and Andrea Viliani, Italian co-curator of Documenta in Kassel. 

All in all, we will give the label “Made in Italy” all the attention it deserves. But we also have begun to look towards the international scene with greater attention than before; the galleries that make up the selection committee are proof of this—Sapone from Nice and Kewenig, that soon will open a new seat in Berlin. A new section of so-called Solo Shows, galleries that present a sole artist using a special rate, so as to differentiate and better put forward the presence at the fair of the galleries themselves will be introduce. Other sections will be conceived in the future regarding the production of art by younger generations, but also that which already has a place in history. Arte Fiera is therefore lives its Year Zero as an answer to the economic crisis that we are going through by aiming at a constantly high quality in its offering and the great desire to start over.
