NICOLA TANZINI EXHIBITION: TOKYO TSUKIJI - LAST REPORTAGE OF THE WORLD’S BIGGEST FISH MARKET
exhibition | Photography | Events
Through his black and white images, Nicola Tanzini captures the final moments of the most famous fish market in Tokyo. In his reportage Tsukiji represents for the photographer the right environment where to describe a significant event for the people working there. Chaos, physical effort and stress are displayed through the poetic eye of the photographer.
Spazio Paoletti will be hosting TOKYO TIKUJI, a 30 images reportage made by Nicola Tanzini (Pisa, 1964) and curated by Benedetta Donato. The exhibition shows the moments and emotions of workers during the last hours of Tsukiji fish market, closed in fall 2018 after 75 years due to the preparation of 2020 Olympics.
The exhibition will be held from the 18th to the 31st of January in Spazio Poletti newest space located at Strada Maggiore 14 (Bologna). Spazio Poletti has been known as a landmark in Bologna for promoting photography and visual arts.
Although the theme of the reportage is Tsukiji, Tanzini’s main focus is jonai shijō, the real heart and most central area of the market where the fish sellers are intent on organising and closing up their stalls. The images convey a feeling of tiredness of the workers and at the same time chaos because it’s the last day of this historical market.
Benedetta Donato comments “Tanzini’s black and white images are definitely influenced by the great master Daido Moriyama and can be contextualised in the humanist tradition and street photography movement. In fact, the photographer portrays candid moments of the market and its people; by capturing their true essence he elevates them as examples of human categories far beyond stereotypes”.
The exhibition is supported by a book, divided in 8 sections that represent the different parts of the workers daily life at the market, which were identified by the photographer himself. This book will be launched on Thursday 31st January 2019 at 18:30 during ARTEFIERA Nicola Tanzini and Benedetta Donato.
