SETUP CONTEMPORARY | ARTFAIR - 5th Edition
Event | Fair | Art
It is with immense pride SetUp Contemporary Art Fair announces the names of the exhibitors who will attend, from the 27th to the 29th of January 2017, the Autostazione of Bologna for its fifth edition. The exhibiting galleries will be as many as 60, including the extraordinary presence and participation of 15 foreign galleries. The exclusive format, distinguishing SetUp from five years as the only international art fair revolving around a central theme, celebrates this edition with the theme of EQUILIBRIUM, symbolic heir of the theme of orientation treated last year.
The submitted and selected projects deal with the quote of the philosopher Soren Kierkgaard: "Daring means losing your equilibrium for a moment, not daring means losing yourself."
From this thematic choice, five categories have been created: Main Section; Solo Show; Drawing the World II; P(I)IGS CAN FLY; S.O.S SetUp Open Space.
Main Section: The Main Section gathers together Italian and foreigns galleries which responded to the call by submitting a curatorial project with at least one artists under 35, together with a critical essay written by an under 35 curator - a strengthened format, that involves the three key figures of the contemporary art world (artist, curator-critic, gallery owner) and encourages interaction among them.
Solo Show: The striking and bold section Solo Show gathers together five galleries presenting only one unique project according to the fair formula that combines an artists together with a curator both under 35.
P(I)IGS CAN FLY: Fully international, P(I)IGS CAN FLY is a project curated by Eleonora Battiston gathering together five galleries: Portugal with Modulo-Centro Difusor de Arte from Lisbon, Greece with Alma Gallery from Athens, Spain with Blanca Soto from Madrid and Artizar from Tenerife and Ireland with Steambox Gallery from Dublin - where Italy acts as host country. Since the end of the last decade, international media have begun to use the acronym PIGS to group those countries in the mediterranean and southern areas of Europe characterized by weak economies and public debt situation: Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain. Ireland was soon added to this group geographically shifting from a southern to a marginal and peripheral vision.
Drawing the World II: As a confirmation of the continuous exchange between SetUp and the international art scene, the prestigious section Drawing the World II curated by Monica Alvarez Careaga is back again. The curator and director of Drawing Room Madrid meets for the second time the invitation of SetUp, presenting four galleries with four artists from different cultural contexts, India, Poland, Marocco and Spain. These artists share the drawing practice, which becomes a fundamental tool for the design and crystallization in the artwork.
S.O.S SetUp Open Space: The fifth edition of SetUp Contemporary Art Fair gets a new look with the brand new section S.O.S SetUp Open Space, a space dedicated to experimental projects. The acronym Open Space is a distress call launched to the visionaries of the art world, ready to put themselves to the test through revolutionary languages and expressions. After 5 years of work, this is a way to keep on giving space and encouraging those who do not dare to be irreverent, those who do not follow the taste and who are not afraid to show themselves for what they really are. The winning project of this section will be awarded with the Alviani ArtSpace Prize for having been able to exploit the theme of Equilibrium, understood as a lack of quite and as a generator of an existential engine.
